SPECIAL LECTURE ON THE TOPIC "FEMICIDE"
At the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad, on June 12, 2018 we hosted another interesting lecture as part of our special lecture series. Namely, Dr. Zorica Mršević, a women rights activist, researcher and scientific adviser at the Institute for Social Sciences - Belgrade, delivered a lecture on a very important topic: "Femicide".
Currently, in our society, there is a widespread opinion that the phenomenon of violence against women cannot be prevented. What is more, Dr. Zorica Mršević believes that there is a long-lasting neglect of this problem and adds that violence must be prevented by force. The occurrence of violence against women is not spontaneous and will not spontaneously disappear. It is necessary for state institutions to address and resolve this problem together with experts and activists from non-governmental organizations who are faced on a daily basis with the problem of violence against women and know precisely what activities and measures should be taken to prevent them. "In the beginning, women tend to hesitate to report violence. However, when - at a later stage -they realize that their life is in danger, they seek help, which, unfortunately, does not come" - says Dr. Mršević.
The increase in affordable services for women who are victims of violence (SOS phones and safe houses), together with various policies and legal mechanisms used to prevent violence against women can directly reduce the number of killed women.
Lectures and discussions on the topic of femicide, like this one - held at the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad - although seemingly a minor contribution to solving the problem of violence against women, help raise the awareness of citizens that violence cannot be tolerated and must not continue to happen. Students of the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad participated in the discussion on this current topic and showed great interest in it.
