FIRST INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE “FROM POGROM TO THE ULTIMATE CRIME”
The first International Scientific Conference titled "From Pogrom to the Ultimate Crime" was held at the University Business Academy in Novi Sad on June 26 and 27, 2024. The event was organized by the University Business Academy in Novi Sad, with the support of the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia.
This conference marks the first international event organized by the University Business Academy with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of developing and maintaining a culture of remembrance. The conference gathered over 20 authors, nearly half of whom were from abroad, including from Romania, Italy, North Macedonia, Belarus, Hungary, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The attendees were addressed by Prof. Dr. Marijana Carić, President of the Council of the University Business Academy, who presented the University and its development from its founding to the present day.
The conference was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Dragan Soleša, Rector of the University Business Academy, who welcomed the participants. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Dragan Soleša emphasized the significance of organizing such a scientific conference to preserve the culture of remembrance and announced the implementation of a project aimed at raising awareness about this issue.
Prof. Dr. Zoran Pavlović, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at the University Business Academy and President of the Organizing Committee of the First International Scientific Conference, stated: “Organizing an international scientific conference on the theme 'From Pogrom to the Ultimate Crime' marks the beginning of one of the most important activities in the functioning of the University Business Academy—working on developing a culture of remembrance. This means that we must work, both with young people and those who are no longer young, to understand the events of the past so that they are never forgotten, and to develop a sufficient level of awareness to ensure that such events, which happened to us in the past, never happen again. If we do not treat the victims of the past with full respect, we will surely fail to properly value what we have today. By fostering a culture of remembrance, we will undoubtedly create a society that can live in the spirit of tolerance, non-discrimination, and respect for others. Only by building awareness of the importance of nurturing a culture of remembrance and its implementation among all members of society can we contribute to a better collective future.”
After the official opening of the conference, Prof. Dr. Milan Počuča, Dean of the Faculty of Law for Commerce and Judiciary, delivered an introductory lecture based on personal memories, titled "Divoselo – The Village That No Longer Exists," after which the presentation of papers in the first thematic section, titled "Punitive Aspects of Pogroms," began. The second thematic section featured papers on the topic "Historical, Cultural, and Ethical Issues of Pogroms."
